Cato Research is a full-service contract research and development organization with international resources dedicated to helping pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies efficiently and expeditiously navigate the regulatory approval process in order to bring new drugs, biologics, and medical devices to the people who need them. Cato is a non-laboratory environment.

 

We are currently recruiting a Strategic Business Developer in our Durham headquarters to promote, sell and secure Cato's preclinical, clinical and regulatory services to existing and new clients/sponsors in Canada, North Central and the North East US states.  Responsibilities include the following:

  

  • Achieve or exceed sales income targets - not measured on sales volume alone - contributing to the overall company targets and commercial goals.
  • Provide additional support or sales leadership for other clients outside of this region by agreement with Cato's commercial leadership (e.g. because of previous contacts or special expertise).
  • Gather relevant intelligence and information for each account and opportunity to support the drafting of competitive proposals and to support qualification and internal decision making (e.g. client cash position).
  • Provide guidance on services best suited to each sponsor's needs and internal commercial leadership for the pursuit and successful winning of profitable business from that account.
  • Maintain contact with accounts while focusing on the strategic nature of the relationship, representing the organization to the customer and the customer to the organization.
  • Responsible for expanding and retaining named accounts while ensuring ongoing customer service and satisfaction.  Maintain a pipeline of opportunities by targeting accounts that will have a major strategic impact on the short, medium and long-term success of the organization. 
  • Represent Cato at external meetings and conferences as appropriate. Participate in internal meetings and initiatives to further develop Cato's commercial performance (sales, marketing, promotional activities).
  • Adapt and implement global sales and marketing initiatives for the sales territory. Where appropriate, propose and lead new initiatives to develop Cato's commercial performance and profitability.

 

 Experience:          5-8 years of experience in related industry (pharmaceutical, medical device, biotech, or contract research organization [CRO]).

 

Education:           Requires a Bachelor's degree or an appropriate combination of education and experience

 

Skills:                     Critical thinking and analytical skills as well as good written, verbal, interpersonal, and negotiating skills required. Dependability and ability to take action to meet immediate challenges, think proactively, and meet future opportunities and challenges.   Knowledge of and insight into general business principles and practices as well as current business priorities and requirements.  Ability to negotiate, persuade, or influence others to accept a point of view, adopt a specific agenda, or to take a course of action.  Demonstrates potential for technical proficiency, flexibility, creativity, and collaboration with others and independent thought.  General knowledge of regulatory, scientific and clinical development. Existing contact network within the industry (i.e. pharma, biotech, investors, start-up incubators) is an advantage as is experience of selling services within the life sciences sector.
